What Is Reiki? A Gentle Introduction to Energy Healing
Curious about Reiki? Learn what this gentle energy-healing practice involves, what you may experience during a session, and how in-person and remote Reiki can support relaxation, balance, and reconnection.
Reiki is one of the services people ask me about most often, especially when they have never experienced energy healing before.
Some people initially assume Reiki is a type of massage. Others wonder whether they need to understand chakras, meditate, or believe in energy healing for a session to be worthwhile.
The truth is that Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive wellness practice that asks very little of the person receiving it.
You remain fully clothed, rest comfortably, and allow yourself time to slow down.
What Does Reiki Mean?
Reiki is pronounced “ray-key.”
The word comes from Japanese terms commonly translated as universal or spiritual energy and vital life energy. Reiki practitioners use a light-touch or hands-above-the-body approach with the intention of supporting relaxation, balance, and overall well-being.
There is no massage, manipulation, or pressure applied to the body.
During an in-person session, my hands may rest lightly on or above different areas of the body, depending on your comfort and consent. Reiki can also be offered remotely, allowing you to receive a session from home.
What Happens During a Reiki Session?
At the beginning of your session, we may briefly discuss how you have been feeling and what you would like support with.
You do not need to arrive with a perfect explanation or a specific goal. Some clients come because they feel stressed, emotionally heavy, disconnected, exhausted, or simply in need of quiet time.
During the Reiki portion of the session, you rest comfortably while I facilitate the energy work.
People may experience:
Deep relaxation
Warmth, coolness, or tingling
A heavy or floating sensation
Emotional release
Colors, images, or memories
A meditative or dreamlike state
A feeling of greater calm or clarity
No particular sensation beyond resting quietly
There is no correct way to experience Reiki. Each person and each session can feel different.
Reiki and the Chakra System
Reiki is often used alongside awareness of the chakra system.
The seven main chakras are traditionally associated with different areas of emotional, energetic, and spiritual experience:
Root Chakra: grounding, security, and stability
Sacral Chakra: creativity, emotion, and connection
Solar Plexus Chakra: confidence, personal power, and self-worth
Heart Chakra: love, compassion, and forgiveness
Throat Chakra: communication and authentic expression
Third Eye Chakra: intuition and inner insight
Crown Chakra: spiritual connection and purpose
During a session, I may pay attention to areas that feel out of balance or in need of additional support. You do not need to understand the chakras or identify an imbalance yourself before booking.
What Can Reiki Support?
People often seek Reiki when they would like support with:
Relaxation and stress reduction
Emotional balance
Feeling grounded and centered
Rest during demanding seasons
Reconnecting with themselves
Creating space for reflection
Supporting an ongoing healing journey
Feeling lighter, calmer, or more settled
Reiki does not require you to talk through painful experiences or revisit every detail of the past. For some clients, that makes it a comfortable way to receive gentle support without feeling pressured to explain everything they have been carrying.
Reiki Does Not “Fix” You
I do not believe you are broken or need to be fixed.
Reiki is not about a practitioner healing you from the outside. It is about creating a supportive environment where you can rest, reconnect, and listen more closely to what your own mind, body, emotions, and spirit may need.
A phrase on the graphic for this post says:
“Reiki doesn’t heal you. It helps you remember how to heal yourself.”
For me, that reflects the heart of this work.
The practitioner facilitates the session, but your healing journey remains your own. Reiki can be one supportive part of that journey.
Can Reiki Be Done Remotely?
Yes. I offer remote Reiki sessions for clients who prefer to receive support from home or who do not live near my Idaho locations.
Remote sessions may be offered through Zoom, and you can choose whether to leave your camera on or off. Depending on the service booked, distance Reiki may also be completed without a live call.
Remote Reiki may be especially appealing when you:
Live outside the area
Have limited transportation
Prefer the privacy of your own home
Feel too tired or overwhelmed to travel
Want to rest immediately after the session
Are more comfortable without an in-person appointment
You can settle into your bed, couch, or another quiet place while the session is facilitated remotely.
Do You Have to Believe in Reiki?
You do not need to understand Reiki completely or arrive with absolute certainty.
My own introduction to Reiki began with curiosity and skepticism. I originally thought I was scheduling some kind of massage or bodywork session. That experience surprised me and eventually became part of the path that led me to this work.
You are welcome to be curious.
You are welcome to ask questions.
You are also welcome to approach Reiki simply as an opportunity to slow down, rest, and receive compassionate support.
Is Reiki a Replacement for Medical Care?
No.
Reiki is a complementary wellness practice. It is not intended to diagnose or treat a medical or mental-health condition, and it should not replace care from a physician, therapist, or other licensed professional.
Many people choose to use Reiki alongside their existing medical, mental-health, spiritual, or wellness support.

Saturday Is for Slowing Down: Can Reiki Be Done Remotely?
Can Reiki really be offered remotely? Learn what distance Reiki is, how Zoom and no-call sessions work, and how to prepare for a peaceful Reiki experience from home.
Saturday can be a natural invitation to slow down, breathe a little more deeply, and step away from the pressure to keep doing.
When was the last time you gave yourself permission to simply rest?
Rest is not wasted time. It gives your mind and body an opportunity to settle after carrying the stress, emotions, responsibilities, and demands of the week. Even a short pause can help you feel more grounded and connected to yourself.
Reiki offers one gentle way to create that pause.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy-healing practice intended to encourage relaxation, balance, and a greater sense of well-being.
During a Reiki session, you remain fully clothed and rest comfortably while the practitioner facilitates the session. There is no massage, physical manipulation, or pressure to talk through personal experiences.
People often describe feeling:
Calmer and more relaxed
Lighter or less emotionally burdened
More grounded and centered
Peaceful or deeply rested
More connected to themselves
Every person experiences Reiki differently. Some notice warmth, tingling, heaviness, lightness, colors, emotions, or a meditative state. Others simply feel relaxed. There is no particular sensation you must experience for the session to be meaningful.
Can Reiki Really Be Done Remotely?
This is one of the questions I hear most often.
Yes, Reiki sessions can be offered remotely. Within Reiki practice, energy is understood as not being limited by physical distance, allowing the practitioner and recipient to participate from separate locations.
Many people are surprised by how restful and supportive a remote session can feel. It also gives you the opportunity to receive Reiki without traveling, entering an unfamiliar space, or rearranging more of your day than necessary.
You can participate from your bed, couch, favorite chair, or another quiet place where you feel safe and comfortable.
What Are My Remote Reiki Options?
Healing Energy Studio offers flexible ways to receive remote Reiki based on your comfort and preferences.
Reiki by Zoom
You may join your session through Zoom while relaxing at home.
Your camera can remain on, or you may turn it off if that feels more comfortable. The call provides an opportunity to connect at the beginning and end of the session while still allowing you to rest quietly during the Reiki portion.
Distance Reiki Without a Call
You may also choose a completely private distance Reiki experience with:
No phone call
No Zoom meeting
No camera
No need to speak or participate live
Simply book your session and settle into a comfortable place at the scheduled time. I will facilitate Reiki remotely while you rest wherever you are.
This option may be especially helpful for people who feel tired, overstimulated, private, uncomfortable on camera, or simply uninterested in adding another call to their schedule.
How to Prepare for a Remote Reiki Session
You do not need special equipment or previous Reiki experience.
Before your session, consider creating a comfortable environment where you are less likely to be interrupted. You may choose to:
Silence your phone and notifications
Dim the lights
Lie down or sit comfortably
Use a blanket or pillow
Play quiet music
Keep water nearby
Set a simple intention for the session
There is no need to concentrate, meditate perfectly, or try to make something happen. Your only responsibility is to become comfortable and allow yourself to rest.
Who May Appreciate Remote Reiki?
Remote Reiki can be a good option for people who:
Live outside the Pocatello or Lava Hot Springs area
Prefer receiving support from home
Have limited transportation
Feel uncomfortable attending in person
Have a busy or unpredictable schedule
Want a quiet and private experience
Feel emotionally or physically depleted
Need a gentle opportunity to pause
It can also be helpful during seasons when leaving home feels like one more demand rather than a source of support.
Give Yourself Permission to Pause
You do not have to wait until you are completely overwhelmed before giving yourself rest.
Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do is stop for a moment, breathe, and allow yourself to receive rather than constantly produce, manage, or care for everyone else.
Whether you are nearby or hundreds of miles away, Reiki offers an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with yourself from the comfort of your own space.

In-Person and Distance Reiki: How Both Types of Sessions Work
Both in-person and distance Reiki sessions work with the same goal: helping the body move toward greater balance and ease.
Some people prefer the quiet atmosphere of an in-person session, while others appreciate the comfort and convenience of receiving Reiki from home.
Whichever option you choose, Reiki offers a gentle and supportive way to step out of stress and reconnect with a deeper sense of calm.
Many people are familiar with Reiki as a hands-on energy healing practice. What surprises many people, however, is that Reiki can be offered both in person and at a distance.
Both approaches work with the same intention: helping the body relax, rebalance, and support its natural healing processes.
If you’re new to Reiki, understanding how each type of session works can help you decide what feels most comfortable for you.
How In-Person Reiki Works
During an in-person Reiki session, the client lies comfortably on a massage table while the practitioner gently places their hands on or just above different areas of the body.
The goal is not to manipulate muscles or apply pressure. Instead, Reiki practitioners allow healing energy to flow through their hands to support the body’s natural ability to restore balance.
Many people experience deep relaxation during a session. Some feel warmth or gentle tingling, while others simply notice their mind becoming quieter.
In-person sessions are often ideal for people who enjoy the calming environment of a healing space and the experience of receiving Reiki through hands-on positions.
How Distance Reiki Works
Distance Reiki works with the understanding that energy is not limited by physical location. Practitioners use specific Reiki techniques and symbols that allow them to direct healing energy to someone even when they are not physically present.
While this may sound unusual at first, many people are surprised to find that the experience can feel just as calming and effective as an in-person session.
In a distance session, the client can remain in the comfort of their own home. Many people choose to lie down, meditate, or simply relax while the session is taking place.
Because the body’s nervous system is able to relax in a familiar environment, distance sessions can sometimes feel especially peaceful.
How My Distance Reiki Sessions Work
When I offer distance Reiki sessions, I begin with a short Zoom call of about 10–15 minutes. This allows us to connect and talk briefly about how you’re feeling and what you’d like to focus on during the session.
Some people come with a specific intention, such as stress, emotional heaviness, or physical tension. Others simply want to relax and support their overall well-being.
After we talk, you can choose what feels most comfortable for you.
Some clients prefer to remain on the call with cameras off, relaxing quietly while the Reiki session takes place.
Others prefer to end the call and simply rest while the Reiki energy is sent, knowing the session is underway.
At the end of the session, you can also choose whether you’d like to reconnect and talk briefly about how you feel, or simply allow the experience to settle naturally.
This flexible approach allows each person to receive Reiki in a way that feels calm and supportive.
What People Often Experience During Reiki
Every person’s experience is unique, but common sensations during Reiki sessions include:
• deep relaxation
• warmth or gentle tingling
• emotional release
• a sense of calm or clarity
Some people fall asleep during sessions, while others remain aware but very relaxed.
Afterward, people often describe feeling lighter, calmer, or more centered.
Choosing the Session That Feels Right for You
Both in-person and distance Reiki sessions work with the same goal: helping the body move toward greater balance and ease.
Some people prefer the quiet atmosphere of an in-person session, while others appreciate the comfort and convenience of receiving Reiki from home.
Whichever option you choose, Reiki offers a gentle and supportive way to step out of stress and reconnect with a deeper sense of calm.
