In-Person and Distance Reiki: How Both Types of Sessions Work

Many people are familiar with Reiki as a hands-on energy healing practice. What surprises many people, however, is that Reiki can be offered both in person and at a distance.

Both approaches work with the same intention: helping the body relax, rebalance, and support its natural healing processes.

If you’re new to Reiki, understanding how each type of session works can help you decide what feels most comfortable for you.

How In-Person Reiki Works

During an in-person Reiki session, the client lies comfortably on a massage table while the practitioner gently places their hands on or just above different areas of the body.

The goal is not to manipulate muscles or apply pressure. Instead, Reiki practitioners allow healing energy to flow through their hands to support the body’s natural ability to restore balance.

Many people experience deep relaxation during a session. Some feel warmth or gentle tingling, while others simply notice their mind becoming quieter.

In-person sessions are often ideal for people who enjoy the calming environment of a healing space and the experience of receiving Reiki through hands-on positions.

How Distance Reiki Works

Distance Reiki works with the understanding that energy is not limited by physical location. Practitioners use specific Reiki techniques and symbols that allow them to direct healing energy to someone even when they are not physically present.

While this may sound unusual at first, many people are surprised to find that the experience can feel just as calming and effective as an in-person session.

In a distance session, the client can remain in the comfort of their own home. Many people choose to lie down, meditate, or simply relax while the session is taking place.

Because the body’s nervous system is able to relax in a familiar environment, distance sessions can sometimes feel especially peaceful.

How My Distance Reiki Sessions Work

When I offer distance Reiki sessions, I begin with a short Zoom call of about 10–15 minutes. This allows us to connect and talk briefly about how you’re feeling and what you’d like to focus on during the session.

Some people come with a specific intention, such as stress, emotional heaviness, or physical tension. Others simply want to relax and support their overall well-being.

After we talk, you can choose what feels most comfortable for you.

Some clients prefer to remain on the call with cameras off, relaxing quietly while the Reiki session takes place.

Others prefer to end the call and simply rest while the Reiki energy is sent, knowing the session is underway.

At the end of the session, you can also choose whether you’d like to reconnect and talk briefly about how you feel, or simply allow the experience to settle naturally.

This flexible approach allows each person to receive Reiki in a way that feels calm and supportive.

What People Often Experience During Reiki

Every person’s experience is unique, but common sensations during Reiki sessions include:

• deep relaxation
• warmth or gentle tingling
• emotional release
• a sense of calm or clarity

Some people fall asleep during sessions, while others remain aware but very relaxed.

Afterward, people often describe feeling lighter, calmer, or more centered.

Choosing the Session That Feels Right for You

Both in-person and distance Reiki sessions work with the same goal: helping the body move toward greater balance and ease.

Some people prefer the quiet atmosphere of an in-person session, while others appreciate the comfort and convenience of receiving Reiki from home.

Whichever option you choose, Reiki offers a gentle and supportive way to step out of stress and reconnect with a deeper sense of calm.
