What Is Reiki? A Simple Introduction to Energy Healing
If you’ve ever heard the word Reiki and wondered what it actually means, you’re not alone.
Many people are curious about Reiki but aren’t sure what it is or how it works. Some think it’s a type of massage. Others assume it’s something mystical or difficult to understand.
In reality, Reiki is much simpler than people expect.
Reiki is a gentle form of energy healing that helps the body relax, rebalance, and support its natural ability to heal.
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:
Rei, meaning universal or spiritual wisdom, and Ki, meaning life energy.
This life energy is the same concept known as Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine or Prana in yoga traditions. It refers to the natural energy that flows through and around every living thing.
When this energy is flowing freely, we tend to feel balanced and well. But stress, emotional experiences, trauma, and physical illness can disrupt that flow. Over time, those disruptions may show up as tension, fatigue, emotional heaviness, or physical discomfort.
Reiki works by helping restore a smoother flow of energy.
During a Reiki session, the practitioner gently places their hands on or just above different areas of the body. The intention is not to “fix” or force anything, but to allow the body’s own healing processes to activate.
Many people describe Reiki as deeply relaxing. Some feel warmth or tingling during a session, while others simply experience a sense of calm. It’s also common for people to feel lighter, clearer, or more emotionally balanced afterward.
One of the most important things to understand about Reiki is that it is non-invasive and supportive. It does not replace medical care. Instead, it works alongside other healing approaches by helping the body shift out of stress and into a more balanced state.
Reiki is often used to support people who are experiencing:
Stress or anxiety
Emotional overwhelm
Grief or major life transitions
Chronic tension or fatigue
Difficulty sleeping
A desire for deeper relaxation and balance
Many people also receive Reiki simply because it helps them reconnect with themselves in a quieter, more peaceful way.
You don’t need to believe anything special for Reiki to work. In fact, many people approach it with curiosity rather than certainty.
All that’s really required is a willingness to relax and allow the body to do what it naturally knows how to do: move toward balance.
